Restaurant review – The Dogs Bollocks

For our first restaurant review on the eat.art blog we have selected the very trendy Dog’s Bollocks. For those of you who are out of the loop and haven’t heard about this unique little spot yet, you’re in for a treat.

A small driveway, “yard” as it has become to be known, is home to three very interesting restaurants. During the day Deluxe Coffeeworks and The Bitches Tits are open for business and come 17h00 it is converted into a ‘dine and dash’ exclusive burger joint. Making only 50 of these infamous burgers a night, there is no reservation option and is therefore it works on a first come first serve basis.

After having heard so many people rave about the burgers and the awesome atmosphere, we decided it was time to go and see what all the fuss was about. Leaving work in Westlake at exactly 17h00, knowing that if we were late we wouldn’t be fed, we made a beeline for town with empty stomachs and big expectations. Upon arrival we briskly walked up the driveway (yes, it is literally a driveway) and grabbed a table, sat down and then started soaking up our surroundings. We slowly worked out the system behind ordering and receiving your food.

Step 1: Grab a table!

Step 2: Write your name and the number of burgers you would like for the evening on their chalkboard.

Step 3: Have a drink and wait (much to our dismay we realised that you have to in fact bring your own drinks with if you wish to drink anything other than water or Coke).

Step 4: The chef yells out your name and you go up and tell him what selection of burgers you would like. There are roughly 10 different combinations of toppings that all get placed on a standard beef burger.

Step 5: Once you hear your name again you go and collect you burgers.

Step 6: You sit, staring at the ginormous burger in front of you and try and wrap your mind around how you are going to eat it. Being rookies and having no serviettes or cutlery with us, we attempted to devour our ABSOLUTELY delicious burgers with the only tools that we had, our hands.

Step 7: Sit back with a smug smile on your face and embrace the feeling of warmth in your stomach and the complete and utter satisfaction.

Step 8: Wash your extremely messy hands and face in the bathroom and leave so that others can too enjoy in the scrumptiousness that is The Dog’s Bollocks.

We can highly recommend this lovely little spot, it has such an awesome vibe AND it is affordable (R50 – R60 a burger). So if you haven’t been there before then the next time you have a yearning for an amazing burger after 17h00 and you’re feeling brave, go on, do it! You won’t regret it.
