Restaurant Review – Bistro Sixteen82

by Shelley Barnard, MD

Wine tasting, gourmet food and sunshine in the Constantia Valley – what could be better on a Sunday afternoon? We decided to try our luck with Bistro Sixteen82 situated at Steenberg Vineyards and they managed to squeeze us in on the patio without a booking.

Before we got too caught up in the menu we made our way to the beautiful tasting room and were lured in to trying a wide selection of local wines, which are all part of their free standard tasting. The combination of the wine, the setting, with hundreds of huge glass grapes hanging from the ceiling, and chats with the knowledgeable and engaging staff left us slightly light headed and a bit free with the credit card – taking home a variety of what we tasted and liked! I particularly enjoyed their take on Sauvignon Blancs, as they are less acidic and more fleshy than most.

Suddenly ravenous, we poured over the menu, which is divided into sections based on what you might need from the experience: Stimulate, Inspire, Rejuvenate and Indulge. The service was top quality without being snooty and our waitress was always on hand to assist.

I had scallops to start, a delicious and perfectly cooked rarity. For my main course I opted to have the Beef Tataki, which was filled with punchy Asian flavours to complement the great quality steak. My husband had oysters followed by their seared game fish, which was Norwegian salmon on the day.  I can highly recommend all our choices and will be back soon to sample more of their appetising menu, particularly the tapas.

It’s an amazing setting with views of the vineyards, water features and a stunning garden… this establishment just oozes the good life.
