This past weekend some friends and I were lucky enough to get a sneak preview of the new Overgaauw restaurant to be opened mid-November. It’s the latest baby of the ever talented brother and sister team of Camilla & Jason Comins supported by Camilla’s husband, Russel Wasserfal – wordsmith and photographer extraordinaire. This trio’s previous venture was The Table at de Meye which won the eat out best country restaurant award in 2011, no small feat.
The country fare theme carries through to Overgaauw but in a much more intimate and farm style setting and looking onto an amazing view of the Stellenbosch mountains. The little cottage offers a verandah which is great for small functions and other barns and areas that promise to offer amazing wedding and seating venues in the future. Camilla, with her amazing sense of style, has managed to preserve some of the farms heritage through décor choices and antique pieces throughout the garden and farm cottage.
Our lunch started with long, rustic baguettes and salad accompanied by chicken liver pate, cured meats, marinated olives and pickles. These went down well with the homemade lemon cordial and the Overgauuw whites – the favourite of the day being the Sauvignon blanc.
Mains were a hearty array of beef fillet with béarnaise sauce(a family favourite), hasselback potatoes, beetroot tarte tatin and a delish greens dish of broccoli, beans, asparagus and sesame seeds in a light Asian dressing. I think I have found my new favourite form of potatoes and will make it my lifes mission to recreate their crispy deliciousness. I heard other claiming their best part of the meal being the beetroot “pie”. No guilt going back for seconds of the pastry dish.
We ended off with home made chocolate ice-cream and carrot cake from Camilla’s moms recipe book which I was informed is now sadly out of print. I’m sure I can find a copy out there somewhere!
It was the perfect feast for a beautiful day filled with friends, sunshine, laughter and cute little kids!
I wish Camilla, Russel and Jason the very best for their new business venture and have no doubt it will be a roaring success. I’ll definitely be visiting from time to time to taste the developments!
